Vinesh Phogat Secures Paris Olympics Quota

Ticket to Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat Secures Paris Olympics Quota in Women’s 50kg Event

Vinesh Phogat clinched an Olympic quota in women’s 50kg category at Asian Olympic qualifiers. She defeated Kazakhstan’s Laura Ganikyzy 10-0 in the semifinals with technical superiority.

Now, Phogat faces (India) Aktenge Keunimjaeva of Uzbekistan in the final showdown. Her return to wrestling was marked by a period of hiatus and protest.

Phogat competed in two weight categories during national trials on March 11. Despite defeat in the 53kg category, she emerged victorious in 50kg.

โ€œI have fought two battles – one regarding weight cut (53kg to 50kg) and the other is the competition,โ€ an emotional Vinesh said after securing the hard-earned quota. โ€œOn the mat, every performer becomes highly competitive. I had to switch weight class because of compulsion, not by choice. But Iโ€™m proud of having secured the quota for my country in 50kg.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been difficult so far, but when you win, it seems like all the struggles were worth it. Iโ€™ll probably feel at peace with myself for the next four-five days but the Olympics are the main target. Iโ€™ll try to achieve what I couldnโ€™t in the last two Olympics.โ€

Antim Panghal’s prior qualification influenced her decision to compete in 50kg. Phogat eyes Olympic glory at Paris 2024, aiming to leave a lasting legacy.
